There’s No Time Like the Present

I’ve spent a lot of this year thinking about last year. What could have been. What should have been. Even though so many wonderful things happened in 2017 (buying an apartment, moving in with Lucas, finishing this website, turning 30, spending Christmas in Los Angeles with Mom & Dad), my mind is drawn to failures and disappointments like a moth to the flame. An unsuccessful season, failing for the 2nd year in a row to win the Damallsvenskan (the Swedish professional league) and getting knocked out of the UEFA Women’s Champions League in the 2nd round. Big losses for my national team as well- let me tell you that losing 5-0 to the USA in front of 30,600 people (including your own friends and family) does not give you the warm and fuzzies. Watching over a dozen of my teammates pack up their bags and head for new clubs, knowing that their lives (and Instagram stories) will soon be filled with new experiences with new teammates in new cities. Oh great, now I’m getting teary-eyed just writing this. The thing is, it’s April now, which means that I’ve already spent a quarter of this year dwelling on a few negative experiences from last year that I can’t do anything about. I think this quote from Dr. Steve Maraboli hits the nail on the head:

“The past will be your teacher if you learn from it; your master if you live in it.”

I am tired of being controlled by the past, and I’m ready to commit myself to the present. Of course I will still take my learnings from last season with me into this season (which starts in 10 days!!!), and I will forever hold the memories of my former teammates dear to my heart, but it will not be at the expense of truly enjoying where I am, what I am doing, and who I am with right NOW. And right now I am snuggling with Kia, watching The Great British Bake Off, and enjoying a hot bowl of Lentil Veggie Curry. I must admit that this super easy curry recipe has been a huge hit with both teammates and Instagram followers alike this winter season, so if you haven’t given it a try…there’s no time like the present!
